Project Overview – A Finished Focal Wall in La Mesa
The fireplace wall is the natural focal point of any living room, but for this La Mesa homeowner, the empty, underutilized alcoves on either side were a source of wasted space and visual imbalance. They needed a thoughtful, custom solution that would add symmetrical storage, introduce character, and create a truly finished, high-end look. Our team was commissioned to design and build a set of custom Shaker cabinets and rustic floating shelves to complete this essential space.
Our Custom Shelving & Storage & Built-in projects are designed to turn awkward or empty spaces into the most beautiful and functional parts of your home.

Design Challenges & Solutions – Custom Built-in in La Jolla
Challenge: The primary goal was to create built-ins that felt like an original, integrated architectural feature of the fireplace wall, not a simple add-on. The cabinets needed to be crafted to the exact dimensions of the alcoves for a seamless fit, and the blend of minimalist white cabinets with rustic wood shelves had to feel perfectly balanced and intentional.
Solution: We took precise measurements of the fireplace alcoves to build two low-profile base cabinets that fit flawlessly, creating a clean, wall-to-wall look. The handleless, push-to-open Shaker doors were specifically chosen to maintain a modern and uncluttered aesthetic. By introducing the warm, rustic White Oak shelves on one side, we created a beautiful contrast in both texture and color, adding immense character and a personalized touch to the otherwise symmetrical layout. The result is a focal wall that is both perfectly balanced and captivatingly unique.
This project also showcases elements found in our Entertainment Center designs, blending storage and display.
The Results – A Perfectly Balanced Living Room
The new built-ins have completely redefined the living room’s main wall:
- A beautiful, symmetrical, and highly functional fireplace wall that now feels complete.
- An abundance of concealed storage within the handleless cabinets is perfect for eliminating living room clutter.
- A sophisticated blend of modern, clean white cabinetry and warm, rustic wood accents.
“The built-ins have absolutely completed our living room.
