Project Overview – A Bespoke Space for a Music Collection
For a passionate music enthusiast and vinyl record collector in Encinitas, standard off-the-shelf furniture simply couldn’t provide the tailored storage or the sophisticated aesthetic their prized collection deserved. They envisioned a dedicated space that was both a high-fidelity listening room and a gallery for their records. They commissioned our team to design and build a completely custom, two-piece media wall from rich, beautiful Walnut, engineered specifically for their audio gear and vinyl library.

Features of the Custom Media Wall
Service: Full-service custom design, in-house fabrication, and professional installation of a media wall and vinyl record storage system.
Material: Premium American Walnut, hand-selected for its deep, rich coloring and stunning, dynamic grain patterns.
Finish: A smooth, protective satin clear coat finish that enhances the natural beauty and depth of the Walnut wood without adding unnecessary gloss.
Style: A clean, geometric, and minimalist design with strong mid-century modern influences, highlighted by precise mitered corners and expert craftsmanship.
Functional Design:
A matching low media console, or credenza, with open shelving designed to provide sturdy support and essential ventilation for high-end audio components.
A large, floating upper shelving unit with numerous cubbies perfectly sized to store and display 12-inch vinyl LP records.
Design Challenges & Solutions – Custom Furniture in Encinitas
Challenge: The main challenge was to create a robust storage solution that was simultaneously a functional library for a heavy record collection and a beautiful piece of furniture that would serve as the room’s artistic centerpiece. The dimensions of each cubby needed to be perfect for LPs, and the structure had to be engineered to handle significant weight without bowing.
Solution: As shown in the in-progress photos from our workshop, we designed the entire two-piece system from the ground up, using the exact dimensions of a vinyl record album as our core measurement. We constructed the units from high-quality Walnut and employed strong joinery techniques to ensure absolute strength and durability. By designing the upper unit to “float” on the wall, we created a sense of lightness that defies its large size, while the lower console provides a solid visual anchor for the audio equipment. The result is a perfect fusion of an audiophile’s needs and a designer’s aesthetic.
This project is a perfect example of a custom Entertainment Center built for a true enthusiast.

Weight capacity is paramount. Vinyl records are incredibly heavy, so the shelves must be made from strong materials (like solid wood or high-grade plywood) and properly supported to prevent sagging over time. Correct cubby dimensions (around 13″ x 13″) are also crucial.
A floating system is mounted to the wall with hidden hardware or a cleat system, so it appears to float without any visible supports. This creates a clean, modern, and minimalist look.
